Method in Theology stands with Insight as Bernard Lonergan’s most important work. It is Lonergan’s answer to those who would argue that in this time of cultural change and dissolution, the believer is afloat on a sea of multiplying theologies, without rudder or compass. Lonergan was resolute in his refusal to be defeatist on this point. While agreeing that theology must continually change to mediate between religion and culture, he worked out an integral method to guide and control this ongoing process. Method in Theology is the fruit of this labour.

This critical edition has benefited from extensive research into Lonergan's typescripts and from consulting the recordings from several institutes where he lectured over the course of the work’s development. Lonergan's intention was to provide a set of methods that would guide a collaborative community in the ongoing construction of a theology that would move from recovery of the data through resolution of conflicts to contemporary formulations and applications. With this work, the cognitional theory of Insight A Study of Human Understanding underwent a surprising set of developments in the form of what he calls functional specialization.

Method in Theology Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan Book 14 edition by Bernard Lonergan SJ Robert M Doran John D Dadosky Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • This a major work of the 20th century in all areas of human knowledge and wisdom. Lonergan's research and "method" can be applied to any field of human endeavor from quantum theory to astro cosmology. Profound and far-reaching, it is an accute examination of how our minds work. Lonergan applies it to theology but it is universally valid.
  • Great introduction to Bernard Lonergan. Nice that this older reprint still exists. The new critical editions, as useful as they may be to the scholar are cost prohibitive to the novice. Thank you the university of Toronto for keeping this now oldie in print.
  • Excellent book and a great seller.
  • This is a brilliant investigation on method in philosophy, is a complement work of Insight, but in itself "method" is a real and profound guide about understanding. Highly recommend this book because for me it is a "formulary" which you can constantly turn and always brings fresh and interesting ideas.
  • Good book, I recommend you read, came in good condition and on time. Thank You
  • A classic
  • Just what I was looking for
  • Lonergan is one of the foremost theologians of modern times.

What happens when a thoroughly 20th-century American lady journalist becomes a Mexican señora in the 1930s provincial Monterrey? She finds herself-sometimes hilariously-coping with servants, daily food allowances, bargaining, and dramatic Latin emotions. In this vivid autobiography, Newbery Award winning author Elizabeth Borton de Treviño brings to life her experiences with the culture and the faith of a civilization so close to the United States, but rarely appreciated or understood. This special young people's edition presents the humor and the insights of a remarkable woman and her contact with an era which is now past, but not to be forgotten.

My Heart Lies South The Story of my Mexican Marriage Young People Edition Audible Audio Edition Elizabeth Borton De Trevino Karen Savage Bethlehem Books Books Reviews

  • This is an edition for young people, as the cover indicates. I enjoyed reading it, having made the choice to read it with someone I am tutoring, but I loved the original book (one of my all-time favorites) even more; this one leaves some things out. Elizabeth Borton de Trevino is--or, I should say, was, as she died in 2001 in her late 90s--a delightful writer.
  • I bought this book for my eighth grader's homeschool curriculum. I read it first, and I absolutely loved it. It is humorous and engaging, taking the reader through old customs and traditions from provincial Mexico, and providing an interesting comparison to our culture. My daughter enjoyed it at least as much, and it's provided material for several interesting discussions, not only on Mexican traditions, but life in general. I've recommended to several people, including one of my dearest friends who is in her seventies. You will not regret purchasing this book.
  • This book is an autobiography of an American woman who came to Mexico on what she thought was going to be a brief assignment and ended marrying with a Mexican and staying in Mexico for the rest of her happy life. But the book is much more than this. It describes the clash between the very different cultures of Mexico and the USA which result, almost always, in hilarious situations.
Almost everything described happens in Monterrey, Mexico where she lived with her husband and eventually with her children, but as she mentions in the book, the extended family is extremely important in Mexico and she got to love and respect her "Mamacita" and "Papacito" (mother and father-in-law) as much, or maybe even more, than her own parents. "To Mamacita and Papacito I dedicate this book in loving memory."
The Treviño Borton family is, in my humble opinion, "every family of mankind, the archetypal family about whom all mankind is dreaming." (Quoting from a review of Finnegans Wake). As such, anyone may appreciate this book, but... for Regiomontanos (people from Monterrey) it means much more it describes the inner workings of the social fabric in the city, it brings to life the infinite subtlety of their ways, it gives a microscopic historical view of the 1930's that you can hardly find anywhere else, it creates a deep longing for a beautiful past.
I, like Borton, married with Monterrey. Her husband was Luis Treviño. My wife is Olivia Treviño and through Borton I finally understood why "the Family" is of such overwhelming importance for my wife.
The interest that this book generated in me was so great that I decided to journey through Elizabeth's world... 70 years later.
I have built a web site where you can see how her house, her Mamacitas house, and many other places she mentions in the book look TODAY... 70 YEARS LATER. ...
Many things have changed during the years but writing from Monterrey I can say, as she once said, "I was then, as now, so safe, so happy, within that fortress - the family."
  • What a charming book about a woman from the United States who marries a Mexican and the trials, tribulations, and good times she has assimilating to a totally different culture in Monterrey, Mexico. There are some hilarious stories about her attempts to do simple things like daily shopping and paying bills. But her bold spirit and sympathetic inlaws help her to acclimate to her new life. This book is full of information on the Mexican culture and a great read too. I totally enjoyed it.
  • a gift- I read this book years ago and loved it
  • I loved this book. It was an easy read, the characters were very "real", and I learned a lot about living in Mexico. I especially found her musings about marriages in Mexico entertaining.
  • A+
  • Great book!

Dying of Whiteness How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America Heartland Jonathan M Metzl 9781541644984 Books Reviews

  • I've been struggling to answer this question for years and was hoping that HILLBILLY ELEGY would at least begin to answer that question and help me understand. It didn't. In contrast, I'm happy to say that Dr. Metzl writes a searing, intelligent analysis which encompasses a wide psychological and sociological grasp of people, places, politics, and positions. Highly readable, I felt that finally someone gets it and helped me get it!

Although I saw the author on television in the same interview many reviewers allude to, I'm particularly alarmed that someone reviewed this book without having read it. Bizarre, but these are the times we're living in -- the age of being proud of one's own ignorance. Thus, a major point of the book is highlighted.

    Highly recommended.
  • I also have not yet read the book. But I want to counteract the one-Star review of another person who has NOT READ THE BOOK below. my impression of the author on Morning Joe this morning was the polar opposite why DO people vote against their own interests. Why a person on his deathbed would STILL deny the validity of the ACA because he didn’t want ‘his tax dollars to help Mexicans and Welfare Queens. ‘ THAT is racial bias that Republicans have promoted!
  • This book was a great read. The author help the reader gleam the heart of people who would rather harm there own existence then be humane to others. I live in the south. Mississippi had the opportunity to expand medicaid. My Republican party did not want to expand Medicaid. The medical industry is our largest employer. Most people on Medicaid are white and elderly, but most people think it is benefiting black people in the state. However, the rural white people would benefit the most. It would also bring more revenue and jobs to the state. It reminds me of the cult mentality, that caused the followers of Jim Jones to commit suicide, regardless of the red flags and facts. This book opened my eyes. You can not change hate, unless the individual wants to be reasonable. Some people are their own worse enemy. It is sad that they are willing to die in ignorance and hate rather than change. We hurt ourselves when we blame our problems on people who do not look like us.
  • I saw an interview this morning and immediately purchased and downloaded for . I finished it several hours later. As a citizen of Tennessee, I found his insights on the failure of Tennessee to expand Medicaid to be on target. I am looking forward to others I know reading the book, so we can discuss it. While the first chapter sets the context, it may seem very academic. Depending on your learning style, some people may prefer starting at chapter two and then coming back to read chapter one later.
  • I would point out that the reviewer who did not read the book, but gave it 1 star because he took umbrage with a physician telling him about “white southerners”, exemplifies the mindset that Dr. Metzel is describing — a partisan filtering of information and unwillingness to thoughtfully consider information that runs counter to political propaganda. CNN had a town hall in 2017 with coal miners from W. VA who benefited from the Medicaid expansion in the ACA and the finding for rural health centers that the ACA provided. They had healthcare coverage for serious and chronic illnesses, and no longer had to drive two or theee hours to their doctors. This was at the height of the “repeal and replace Obamacare” push by Trump and the GOP in congress. Many were in tears, realizing that their votes for Trump put them
In a position of losing their healthcare access. Sadly, many of them didn’t realize that the ACA was “Obamacare”. This book explores the culture and information silos and frankly, misinformation campaigns that cause people to vote against their own interests. Well worth the read prior to 2020.
  • Perhaps this is the only way to speak openly about race in America as a glancing blow at those who have relied on racism throughout American history — first as an existential necessity, and now as an existential last resort.

The author is talking about people who still hold out visions of continuing to trade on their lack of melatonin, and who have supposed that this same lack spells race superiority? They do this at the expense of their equally-suffering fellow citizens who just happen to come ready-packaged in a darker outer wrapper.

Here, the author shows how this America-centric fantasy has come to an abrupt and ignominious halt It has boomeranged back onto those very fantasizing people.

While they buy the pre-cooked racist pie-in-the-sky — the red meat rhetoric of rich politicians, who are merely trying to hold their place at the top of the economic Ponzi scheme — they fall like a rock tossed into the Mississippi.

Sadly, they are so economically and emotionally rattled and incompetent, they refuse to take the time to notice that when everyone is falling down the elevator shaft at the same rate, white skin no longer holds its value.

As quiet as it is kept, this author tells us that whiteness has lost all of its meaning. And most of all, cannot save those who depend on it from their own culturally-inbred self-perpetuated ignorant fantasies.

They hug the flag, and then shoot themselves in the foot economically with “Trumpy bear-like” patriotic fervor.

The soberest part of this book is to realize that the “real data” is telling us something we already knew That we have all been had!

It is truly sad because America did not have to go down this way ...

Careless, greedy, unpatriotic, mean-spirited, corrupt and sometimes even out right venal politicians on both sides of the political divide have found the need to use wedge and “reality TV” politics to drive a stake into the heart of all striving working-class people.

The author says that Trump played Hilary’s “basket of deplorables” like a cheap bass fiddle. And why not? They were waiting to be had.

And now, the democrats are triangulating so that in 2020 they can do the same? They want to end identity politics so that they can get to the only identity that used to matter, white identity.

But we have become accustom to the fact that the political classes lie out of both sides of their mouths at the same time, as they stand in a circular firing squad pretending to point their guns at each other.

But we know who their real targets are us, all working class people. And when they shoot, they do so without any regard for color whatsoever.

Miraculously, when the smoke clears from their point-blank firing circle, somehow, they never manage to kill off anyone within their own circle? No matter how devastating are the crimes they commit, none of them ever get prosecuted or ever go to jail? They all always get a pass? They alway protect their own.

But when the firing stops, the economy has somehow melted, and the pharmaceutical companies have replaced the Cali cartel as drug pushers of first resort, and the life-span of the ducks on the ground beneath them somehow has diminished dramatically?

They then call this once every four years circular shoot-out in Washington DC, a functioning democracy? (That is not what Vladmir Putin calls it?)

Obama-Biden; Hillary-Kaine, Warren-O’Rouke, or Trump-Pence roll the dice and they all come up craps!

Could there be a better wake up call?

As the opioid crisis sweeping across the heartland shows, the fall has been most dramatic by those who elect the Confederate-leaning Republican politicians, politicians who have never seen an American citizen they would not first fleece and then shoot in the back of the head, with a gun co-signed by the NRA.

It is fitting that it took a medical doctor to tell the truth, since the medical profession is more racist than any other of America’s racist institutions, including the church. Five stars

The Rootes Group once dominated the British motor industry, and its legacy lives on in thousands of carefully maintained cars – most notably Hillmans, Humbers, Singers and Sunbeams. In this book, using beautiful images from the Rootes Archive Centre, Richard Loveys details the Group's history and leading car models, from its creation as a car dealership by William and Reginald Rootes, through its transition into motor manufacture, and expansion by taking companies over and developing their car and commercial vehicle ranges. It was a significant contributor to the war effort in 1939–45, producing large numbers of military aircraft and vehicles, and in its post-war heyday produced such icons as the Sunbeam Alpine and Hillman Imp.

  • I really loved the previous books in this series, but this one was quite the let down. For some reason, the author chose to drastically change Cettie’s character. He made her so much weaker and as a result she continuously acted in ways that made no sense. Her father is danger. What does she do? Instead of trying to go to him immediately, she sends a message in directly through a jilted former love interest and former drug addict. Given the option, to send a secure message through her father’s trusted advocate, she says I’ll do that later. Huh? Really? When she finally decided to go visit him, she does so in the company of her bestfriends’s tormemtor and nemesis? And is kidnapped by the same. Really? Her father, the man who saved and changed her life and took her in at great personal cost is then murdered. Does she get angry at the murderers? No instead she tries to get to know them better. Are you kidding me? Why is Cettie such a weak idiot in this book? And yes there is some magical influence here and there, but the story really isn’t plausible. Throw in some other plot holes and you have a poorly written book. I really hope the next one is better. This author is a really good writer, so I’m really disappointed.
  • First let me say I love Jeff Wheeler books. Out of all of them this is 2nd favorite series. King Fountain being my number 1. I have read books 1-3 of this series about 5 times. Counting down the days until book 4 came out. Can I just say my heart hurts. While I am glad Sera has matured, I am heart broken that my Dearest Cettie has done 180 and is so weak now. Book 5 has to turn this around. Maybe, she has to go through this trial to became stronger and put a end to the .....no spoilers... Book 5 I am hoping ends like Princess Maia. Cettie has been through too much.
On a side note I would like to say I love Kate Rudd Narration, for this series.
  • Coming into this book, Sera and Cettie seem to have figured out who they are and the course their life will take them. However, our protagonists experience unanticipated twists caused by the cunning machinations of unscrupulous individuals.

Both Cettie and Sera find their own plans disrupted while the balance of power is threatened in both Comoros and Kingfountain. The antagonists commit many atrocities to usurp power poisonings, deceit, military coups, kidnapping, murder, and a web of lies. As a reader, I felt the pain of losing beloved and important characters. And joy as the criminals are sometimes outsmarted and military victories come. This book is a little darker than some of Jeff’s other books, but underlying the chaos that ensues, there is some light peaking through gathering storm clouds.

Cettie, who has been ever constant and true, finds that what was once clear is now hazy and dark. She learns, at last, her true parentage which brings more questions and doubt than answers and peace. Cettie finds herself at a crossroads, questioning what is real as she tries to figure out who she is in these rapidly changing worlds.

Amid the tumult, Sera embraces the roles that are hastily thrust upon her with grace and conviction. While there is much uncertainty, she provides just enough hope for the future to keep you, as the reader, from completely despairing.

Themes and allusions from many of Jeff’s other series are incorporated into the plot. While you do not need to read his other series to enjoy this one, having done so adds significant depth to the story.

Again, Jeff masterfully finds the balance—the tug and pull in different directions—to keep the reader engaged. I found myself filled with hope, despair, frustration, sadness and joy as this story moved me along with ever-increasing tension toward what must be an epic conclusion in the next book. I anxiously await the final installment—hoping that our champions will find a way out of the snares that have been laid for them, and that justice and truth will prevail as two civilizations clash.

Disclaimer I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
  • I devoured this book in two reads. Then again, it was a short book and my only complaint. I thought this was the last in the series and am disappointed that I have to wait for the final, which I've already pre-ordered. That aside, the saga is gripping, imaginative and wonderfully satisfying. Wheeler has that unique capacity to get his readers deeply invested in his characters and story. I believe this is the 23rd book that I have read and except for two, all were 5-star quality. Thank you, Jeff Wheeler.

#1 New York Times Bestseller
A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

"I can't even express how much I love this book! I didn't want this story to end!"--Reese Witherspoon

"Painfully beautiful."--The New York Times Book Review

"Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver."--Bustle

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Where the Crawdads Sing edition by Delia Owens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • I was very disappointed in this book after reading all the hype about it. While the reading is good, the story is so nonsensical- a 6 year old left alone in a shack raises herself, living in the same shack, using the same boat, and no one lifts a hand to help her? In more than 20 years, the boat never breaks down, the house doesn't need repairs and she's able to wear the same clothes for many years....she's got long hair that she says is ratty and tangled but description s of it has it down her back, luxurious...she's gorgeous but bathing is optional until in her 20s...she has sex with a philanderer but never gets a vd and not once apparently does she get sick. No flu, cold, nothing....she never got shots and apparently has the immune system of a super hero because she stepped on a nail and never got tetanus....I kept reading so I'd finish and the ending is unexpected but it's generally a boring book where day after day, she's alone in the marsh....
  • This is one of the most moving, caring, emotional novels I have ever read. I read this book only because I had met Delia and have read her wildlife books she wrote with husband Mark Owens. After starting the book this was all I could think about for days. Kya's life become part of mine and the characters ceased to live on the page... they were alive with me and I was in the marsh, feeling every feather - the air, creatures and the plants. Jumpin' became a trusted friend and so many moments touched my very soul. I should not have been surprised as Delia has a great style in her wildlife books that I love to read. But a novel like this is not my normal read. Maybe I need to now reconsider what I choose as this book stopped me cold and made me rethink a lot that happened in my life. Delia touched the human soul with her behavioral descriptions. She is not only a respected wildlife scientist, she is a human behaviorist and understands more about the human condition that just about anyone else I know. This is a tremendous treasure of a book and I'm sure it's staying in my read again list for a long time. Highly recommend the book.
  • I am extremely stingy with my compliments for good books, but this tale is well-deserving of the praise. Of the last dozen or so books I've read, only two others earned five complete stars by me She Read to Us in the Late Afternoons A Life in Novels by Kathleen Hill, and Circe by Madeline Miller.

I have to confess that I have also had magical moments with marsh creatures such as herons, eagles, and mud turtles. Like the main character, Kya, I am a compulsive collector of treasures from those Great Rock Tumblers the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean which makes this book so attractive to me. However, Delia Owens' writing is more than just about the natural world. She spins a good and very well-written tale about murder, courtroom drama, nature, poetry, and even love.

Another reviewer described Owens' writing as lyrical. It is. Take your time and savor every sentence.
  • About half this book was good. Beautifully written at times, and with an interesting, plausible story. But wait...the gaps ...Maybe less time talking about Kya fumbling around with sex with Chase and more time on her development as a renowned author and painter would have been nice. There's more, but you may be reading the book. I must comment though on the most ridiculous court room antics since Curly's trial in a Three Stooges short. Oh, I think I just did. (And just after reading a book on Harper Lee - if you know what I mean). This was one of the most disappointing books I have read in quite a long time. Sorry Ms. Witherspoon. Can I get my money back if I return the book?
  • Wow! I just finished reading Where the Crawdads Sing. And I will say it again, Wow! This books is so filled with emotion. Kya, the main character, is trying to survive by herself from a young age. She has been abandoned by those who should teach her, guide her, protect her. She has to fend for herself. Two men come into her life and teach her about the good and bad in life.
I only keep few book's that I know I will read again. This is staying in my library.
  • My favorite book of the year by far. So beautifully written. No skimming over sections in this book. I devoured every single word. I laughed, I cried (a lot) and most importantly thought differently about life - mine and everyone else's. I became the character of Kya, desperately alone and forced to try to eke out an existence on her own in the marshes. The marshes are their own separate character, but despite the fact that I am freaked out by insects and mud and most other creepy crawlies, I could actually imagine myself enjoying the Carolina experience, hard as it was. You will root for Kya, I did, sometimes shouting out loud- You Go Girl!!!!! I read this book in one day and can't stop thinking about it. There are several clues to the surprise ending if you pay attention to the details. This is a KEEPER!
  • This book had so many fantastic reviews. I was looking forward to reading it but quickly became disillusioned. I'm from NC and have never heard anyone talk with the type of accents Ms. Owens chose for her characters. It seems like a small thing but it was extremely distracting, and eventually became ridiculous, especially because the characters somehow switched back and forth between speaking like Mark Twain's Jim to perfect English. It made me wonder if the author has ever been to our fair state. The story was good enough, albeit predictable, and it's obvious the author did her research on marsh life. I learned quite a few wildlife facts that were interesting. The conversations just kept me wrinkling up my nose with distaste and I ended the book on a sour note.
  • Started reading it 10am and finished 8pm! Could not put it down. Main characters are easy to get to know (so you think) and the story draws you in from the start! I look forward to more from this author!! Read this Book!
