"I rushed into home buying 2 months ago, being preapproved and actively looking with a real estate agent - I got cold feet and took a step back to reasses. I almost talked my way out of home ownership but decided to take an online course (seemingly helpful but easily forgettable) and bought two books! With the online course completed and this book under my belt I'm feeling confident I have the knowledge to purchase a home confidently.

I'm normally a slow and fantasy/sci-fi reader. But this book only took me 5 days to finish reading (a few hours a day) and I enjoyed every minute. Definelty money well spent.

Now it's time to out my review where my mouth is. I'll update this when I close on a house (hopefully 1st quarter of 2018!)"

  • I'm a dedicated fan of Nolo books. I have been reading them for years. Even their Deduct It book on the latest tax laws put in plain English is a bible as far as I am concerned. All too often first time home buyers have this idyllic outlook on buying a home; it takes on a nirvana type of atmosphere. Unfortunately they look at homeownership as a panacea of good fortune blinding them to the many pitfalls that may await them. Only after getting screwed on their first property do they become astute buyers on their second one. This book shows you how to avoid that costly mistake and become an astute buyer first time around.

It is written with contributions by teams of experts in the real estate sales, brokerage, and mortgage and home inspectors. It even includes input from experienced home buyers recanting their experiences. This is an absolute must read for buying a home. I'll never forget what Peter Lynch said in his book One Up On Wall Street. He said that before you buy any stock buy yourself a home. Nothing will give you a greater return than that. Plus with the tax breaks you can make up to 250k on your personal residence tax free. You no longer have to reinvest it either.

This book contains so many topics of great interest there is no reason for me to go over the complete list of them. You can easily obtain the information covered in each chapter by clicking on the photo of the book in this listing, and it opens up the first chapter including all of the chapter titles and complete list of sub-topics covered in each of them. There is so much information it may seem overwhelming at first, but as you digest it, and then get into the search this wealth of information will be very handy to say the least. It is a real hand holder whether you are obtaining the mortgage, hiring a broker, a home inspector, even figuring out how much of a home and what type you will need. You can get expert advice from professionals in the industry, but exercise caution because depending on what you are looking at they may have an agenda. This book is your clear path to knowledge you can depend on.
  • This book is excellent. I'm a 1st time homebuyer and have lugged this book around with me for weeks...my housing lifeline!! It has been a life-saver in helping educate me through the entire process. I like that I can skip through different sections to focus on areas of interest at that moment, and still understand the process. I enjoyed having the opportunity to download different forms to help me with my "dream-home list" as well as, a handy forms to take with me during each home tour as reference/guide to pay attention to and jot down notes. The book is an easy-user-friendly read that helps prepare and guide your through the housing process from beginning to end. Thanks to this book, my home buying process has been less stressful and more realistic.
  • I had zero knowledge about buying homes before my journey.
This was the only book about home buying that I read cover to cover. It helped me ask the right questions.
I even initially had an offer on a foreclosure but found out we were in far over our heads with repairs, so we pulled out of that deal.
We were really persistent and found the perfect house for our budget. We found a great home in a wonderful neighborhood even though the housing selection at the time of our purchase was really slim.
I am keeping this book for good reference and will buy it again if we are looking for another home.

  • I have been using this as a reference guide while buying my first house. It is well organized in the chronological order that is needed. It has helped me to ask intelligent questions, understand the language the professionals are speaking, and know what to expect next. I used the dream list to come up with my list of housing requirements. While I found the list difficult to use while looking at houses because it's long, it was still valuable to do the exercise so I had the right things in mind.
  • If I had to pick just one book for a first-time home buyer to use, it would be this one. This book probably saved us several thousands of dollars during the home-buying process. It's also written by a variety of people, not just realtors, so you get some of a critical perspective of some things that realtors do, like suggesting home inspectors, that you won't hear from your realtor or realtor-based publications. Nolo doesn't disappoint. It also comes with some great pdfs and recordings.
  • Everything I needed to know for buying a home. Very thorough, and I liked how each chapter was written by a different author who specialized in that field.
  • The book has a lot of great information and does a great job at explaining the home buying process and what to expect.
